Free tax preparation services for eligible individuals and families


At The River Center, we offer free tax prep services for qualifying individuals and households  with incomes of up to $57,000 through our IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer in-person same-day tax preparation appointments at this current time.

We are currently able to offer you 3 ways to have your taxes done in our program:


  • filer must have ability to submit tax documents online
  • your return is prepared remotely
  • turn around time is approximately 1-2 weeks
  • ideal for filers who have the technology and capability to submit and receive information and tax documents, sign electronically, but have more than a few documents


  • filer prepares own return using our software, remotely
  • ideal for the filer with a simple or basic return (no Sch A, C, D or E)
  • filer is technologically confident and has the means to enter information online
  • remote assistance available at predetermined times
  • initial appointment for orientation and for receiving the link to the software is required via Zoom


  • ideal for filers who are no- to low-tech or have more than a basic return
  • filers organize their documents and information into packets which they return to The River Center at a scheduled time
  • once your packet is in, we call you to discuss your documents and answers to the Intake Form before preparing your return (mandatory)
  • returns are prepared remotely and filers come back in 1-2 weeks to pick up their returns to be e-filed

We can prepare returns that have:

  • Wages, salaries, etc. (Form W-2)
  • Interest Income (Form 1099-INT)
  • Dividends Received (Form 1099-DIV)
  • State Tax Refunds (Form 1099-G)
  • Unemployment Benefits (Form 1099-G)
  • IRA Distributions (Form 1099-R)
  • Pension Income (Forms 1099-R, RRB-1099, CSA-1099)
  • Social Security Benefits (Form SSA-1099)
  • Simple Capital Gain/Loss (Form 1099-B)
  • Self-employed Income (Form 1099-NEC) limited
  • Gambling Winnings (Form W-2G)
  • Health Savings Accounts (Form 1099-SA) limited
  • Itemized Deductions limited
  • Education Credits (Form 1098-T)
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Earned Income Credit
  • ACA Statements (Forms 1095-A, B or C)

We cannot prepare returns with:

  • Self-employment income with an overall loss to report, more than $35,000 in expenses, or deductions for depreciation or business use of the home

  • Complex capital gains or losses, or when the cost basis is not reported

  • More than 10 stock transactions
  • Rental income and expenses

  • Other forms for complex tax concerns

What To Bring

  • Proof of identification (photo ID)  <—IMPORTANT
  • Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents <—IMPORTANT
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available <—IMPORTANT if you have it
  • Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check<—IMPORTANT
  • An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted for you, your spouse and your dependents if you do not have a Social Security number
  • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
  • Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R,1099-NEC) from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks and other financial institutions (Forms 1099-INT, 1099-DIV)
  • To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms
  • Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider’s tax identifying number such as their Social Security number or Employer Identification Number
  • Forms 1095-A, B and C, Health Coverage Statements
  • Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable

Save yourself time and disappointment by making sure you have all of the necessary tax documents. The items marked <—IMPORTANT are no more important than the other documents you must provide, but they are often the pieces of information missing when people provide their documents..


We want to be your go-to for tax help, but we understand if you want or need to go elsewhere or if you don’t fall within the scope of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
